The teenagers were traveling on Farm-to-Market 1431, 15 miles east of Marble Falls, at 3:06 a.m. when the driver, Brandon Cook, 18, of Harker Heights, swerved to avoid hitting a deer, according to Texas Department of Public Safety Highway Patrol Austin Trooper Robbie Barrera.

Cook, who was driving a 2007 Mazda, wasn’t injured.

Joseph Alaniz, 18, of Killeen, was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Peggy Simon.
